Andrea Barthwell

Andrea Barthwell was Deputy Drug Czar under President George W. Bush. She resigned in July 2004 with an interest in running for United States Senate from Illinois. Andrea Grubb Barthwell is a United States civil servant and has worked in the White House in sub-cabinet positions under President of the United States George W. Bush. Most recently, she was Deputy Director for Demand Reduction at the Office of National Drug Control Policy with the title of Deputy Drug Czar. She resigned her position in July 2004 for a possible run for the United States Senate from Illinois with the Republican Party. Earlier, nominee Jack Ryan dropped out of the race leaving the party without a candidate. Barthwell's views placed her in the moderate wing of the Republican Party, as she supported abortion rights and opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Education

Barthwell studied at Wesleyan University in Connecticut towards a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. She went on to medical school at the University of Michigan. She moved to suburban Chicago where she participated in post-graduate studies at the University of Chicago and through the medical center of Northwestern University.

Profession

Upon entering the medical profession, Barthwell's ambition allowed her to reach executive positions. She became President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and President of the Illinois Society of Addiction Medicine, an area of medicine that has been one of her specialties. She served as President of the Encounter Medical Group, an Oak Park, Illinois professional consortium that also focused on addiction healthcare. In nearby Chicago, Barthwell was president of two drug treatment centers: BRASS Foundation and Human Resources Development Institute. During her tenure as Deputy Drug Czar, Barthwell frequently appeared in state legislatures and wrote op-eds to newspapers criticizing medical marijuana and supporting mandatory drug testing.

Scandal

Soon after her name was announced in connection to the Senate race, word leaked of a 2003 White House internal inquiry focused on charges that Barthwell harrassed a staff member. He claimed that she made repeated references to him sitting in other men's laps, placed a kaleidoscope under his chair, and told him to to hold a knife during a cake-cutting ceremony becase she knew he'd want to "handle" something "long and hard". She allegedly referred to the cake as "beefy and meaty" and told him she knew he "liked it big and meaty". Barthwell made no public comment on the charges, but soon afterwards, Illinois Republicans chose Alan Keyes to be their nominee. Keyes went on to lose in a landslide. Category:Illinois politicians
